I am proud to show off my natural “immunity idol” that I wear after my recent recovery from COVID 19. I took ivermectin (a 40 year old drug derived from a soil microbe) as well as an herbal and vitamin protocol. It took about a week to recover and I was relatively symptom-free. I had an elevated body temperature, dry cough, and low appetite.

The big question that few people are discussing is what to do with the 39 million people in the US with natural immunity to COVID? One new study out of Israel (currently under peer review) showed that vaccinated people who'd never had COVID-19 were between 6 and 13 times more likely to get infected with Delta than unvaccinated people who'd recovered from COVID-19 infection. Studies also show that this immunity may last several months to possibly much longer. Although getting COVID a second time is rare, two studies show that unvaccinated people had lower rates of pneumonia, heart failure, and acute kidney injury than during their first infection.

Although I don’t have a vaccine card, this latest study suggests I may be MORE protected than fully vaccinated citizens. Wearing my immunity idol may not be sufficient at a concert or airport or restaurant. 😂 How will someone like me with antibodies get the same freedoms as the vaccinated? An antibody test? Only time will tell….

This weekend was @orlandopermaculture 3rd Annual Yummy Yams event at Oakland Nature Preserve.
Using the power of community, we were able to harvest a few hundred pounds of wild invasive yams to ensure space and time for Florida native species to grow and prosper. The benefit to us was a few hundred pounds of edible yams to go home with participants. These yams can be stored for many months, turned into delicious hash browns and fries, made into flour for waffles and sourdough and are super yummy.
We’re thankful for the land stewards of Oakland Nature Preserve for opening their minds to permaculture ideas and for granting us access to this beautiful land for regeneration to begin. We look forward to next year’s yam event with them. #ubeyam #dioscoreaalata

I just completed a fun summer project- an off-grid solar-powered shower! I hooked up the new Joolca Hottap @joolcaco shower system to a rainwater system specifically made for the shower. The pump has a built-in filter which allows it to draw clean water from any water source- pond, stream, water bucket, etc. The shower and pump can easily be removed and used for camping trips or an outdoor shower. The pump is powered with a solar battery and the water is heated with a propane tank. In hurricane-prone Florida, this shower guarantees a hot shower even if the power goes out or city water gets contaminated. No more showering with chlorinated, fluoridated city water. This pandemic is making us realize how fragile we are when it comes to meeting our basic needs. This system is healthier for the body and the ecosystem. Orlando Permaculture's second annual Yummy Yam event was a huge success! We harvested 300 pounds of wild yams from a local nature preserve. We also demonstrated how to process and cook the yams. This versatile tuber can be roasted, fried, mashed, and even dried into flour for baking. Unlike potatoes, these yams can be stored for several months and portions chopped off when needed. Ube yam is considered to be an invasive vine in Central Florida. For the past two years, we've been invited to help remove the vines in exchange for harvesting the delicious tubers they produce underground. The Sun's rays travel 93 million miles to reach our planet. A few of them made it into my @gosun solar grill and cooked up a delicious sweet potato coconut curry! Swipe left for the recipe. I plan to cook at least 2 meals each day off-grid this summer using my biogas stove and solar oven. This recipe makes about 4-6 meals which can be quickly reheated during a busy work week. Making your own organic liquid plant food is easy! Using only plant microbes and sugar, plant material (leaves, fruit, flowers) is broken down into a biologically active, nutritious liquid plant food. Here in Florida, plants like Mexican Sunflower, Moringa, and Sweet Potato Leaves are great sources of plant nutrients. Mix chopped leaves with equal weight brown sugar and the sugar will extract water and nutrients from the plant material over the course of a few weeks. Microbes on the plant material will feed on the sugars and release acids and enzymes that break down the plant material into super bioavailable nutrients. Strain out the liquid and store in jars for several months. I add 3/4 tsp of FPJ to every gallon of irrigation water. A little goes a long way! This is one time of year when I have the most fun working and harvesting from my garden. In addition to the perrenial greens that grow year round, I also have annual favorites growing like Hakurei turnip, Black Seeded Simpson lettuce, Georgia Collards, Daikon radish and Jade bush beans. Every day, I'm amazed by the abundance of nature. It's not about how much space we have to grow, but how creative we are in using that space. Nature is ingenious how it integrates biodiversity. I'm incorporating mycellium into my yard by taking used growbags from a local mushroom grower, breaking them up, and spreading them under the pine straw mulch. This method is a way to add carbon to the soil and produce fresh mushrooms (blue oyster, lions mane) for my weekly meals and medicinal tinctures. In this cool, wet weather, I'm producing a pound or more per week without any effort. There are ways to inoculate the garden with more resilient mycorrhizae, but this method is a fast way to produce mushrooms and repurpose a "waste" product from the mushroom industry. It's been a year since I installed this natural pond in my backyard. The first image was taken today and the last one Dec 29th 2018. It's amazing watching a pond come to life and seeing how plants and animals move in to help create their new home. A few of the feeder goldfish I bought from the fish store for 20 cents are about 8 inches long! Along with the mosquito fish and frogs, they eat whatever comes to the pond. Aquatic plants and rainfall provide oxygen naturally. The aquatic plants on the pond surface cool the pond, provide hiding places for the fish, and reduce algae growth. This is also a way for me to grow aquatic edible and medicinal plants like bacopa, gotu kola, vietnamese cilantro, water celery, oxalis, gingers, taro, aquatic mint, bamboo, etc. #permaculture #naturalpond #pondgarden

Harvested a 55 pound rack of bananas/plantains this week. They average about 250g/8.5 ounces. Food forest abundance! As I walked through the old growth Coast Redwood trees in Muir Woods National Monument, I felt like I was walking through the forest moon of Endor. Homemade, Homegrown Green Banana Flour. Lately, I've been experimenting with making different flours from what I grow. Raw green bananas are gluten free and high in resistant starches which feed beneficial microbes in the gut. These help boost the immune system and increase overall wellness. Chayote harvest. A chayote vine can produce a few hundred squash in a season. The entire plant- roots, shoots, fruits, seeds, leaves, and flowers- are edible! The taste is somewhere between an apple and a potato. A great addition to curries, baked like french fries, or stuffed like a stuffed pepper. Pond Garden Update! It's been 4 months since I installed my second pond in the backyard. I added several edible and medicinal plants that do well around water- including aquatic mint, water leaf spinach, bacopa monneiri, purslane, and gotu kola. Malanga, arrowroot, galangal, and canna lilly are a few edibles that surround the pond and fill it in nicely. The pond is filled with mosquito fish, frogs, and a few goldfish. I don't use a water pump and I don't feed the fish. It is becoming a more sustainable aquatic ecosystem each day. Water has a high heat capacity which means the pond will cool off the garden on hot days but release heat on cool nights and help prevent frost damage. All you need is some old carpeting, a pond liner, and a little creativity. Research is showing that the last 40-50 significant civilizations have collapsed due to soil degradation. This led to famine, drought, malnutrion, disease, and countless wars- including the recent events in Syria. This is disconcerting given that 30% of our cropland has been abandoned in only the past 40 years due to poor soil quality. So what can we do to avoid the same fate? This week, I added a second pond to the backyard. Ponds help regulate temperature in the garden and provide a beautiful habitat for fish, frogs, turtles, and aquatic edible/medicinal plants. I added gambusia fish and goldfish to eat mosquito larvae. I'll add some aquatic plants and flowers as I get them. My 7 pound, 18 inch bazooka is actually a bottle gourd, aka Opo/Calabash. 😁 It tastes like zucchini and could replace it in any recipe. Another action day meal we made at the house was a coconut curry with some veggies from the food forest garden. Green papaya is one of my favorite go-to "veggies" because it's easy to grow and can easily be made into different shapes, textures, and flavors. I also added calabash gourd which is a big producer for me this summer and tastes like zucchini. I sliced them very thin and sauteed with onions, garlic, coconut milk, diced tomato, and a variety of Indian spices. It’s been three weeks since I first added manure to the Biogas system and today I tested for a flame. The flame is powerful, steady, and ready for cooking! The biogas digester will continue to fill up and should give me about 2-3 hours of cooking time each day! Today, I fed my Homebiogas system for the first time! My friend @bradholc hooked me up with fresh cow manure which made 100 Liters (26 gallons) of manure slurry. Over the next few weeks, the bladder on top of the system will fill up with methane gas which can produce up to 2-3 hours of gas per day for cooking or lighting needs. I ran the gas line into the kitchen so I can cook indoors. To maintain it, I will feed it food scraps and manure. My nonprofit Orlando Permaculture recently helped a community member clear out a section of his food forest for growing new plants. It gave us an opportunity to show members how to prepare a space for growing. We chopped down vegetation with machetes and covered it with cardboard and wood chips to suppress weeds. @robjgreenfield looked fully immersed in the experience (and the mud)!! 😁 Popular recording artist @aisha.badru also stopped by to help out. When she's not swinging my machete through heavy vegetation, she is singing some of the most beautiful songs like "Bridges", "Mind on Fire", and "Waiting Around", which you may have heard on popular TV shows and commercials. Being an Airbnb/Couchsurfing host has been a wonderful experience! I've hosted almost 100 different reservations from the most interesting people around the world. Many of them come to see the food forest garden and taste some of the most nutritious plants from all over the world. I hope to one day do this on a larger scale. A quick tour of my food forest garden. Plants grown in living soil are much happier and more nutrient dense. I can taste and feel the difference! A 2003 study by Dr. David Thomas explained we would need to eat twice as much meat, 3x as much fruit, and 4-5x as many veggies to get the same amount of minerals as in the same foods in 1940. Living soil fixes many of these deficiencies. I've gotten this far through the Florida summer without much pest control. But now the caterpillars are hitting my cucumbers so it's time to bring out the big guy - the Hudson Fog Atomizer Sprayer. It's electric and powered with my solar panels. The fog is a particle mist but very powerful. A little goes a long way! I'm using Neem oil, a few drops of castile soap, BT for the caterpillars, as well as OHN (Oriental Herbal Nutrients) and LAB (lactobacillus bacteria) to build up the health of the plants. I saw a Yaupon Holly Tree outside of a cafe today and it inspired me to roast and brew the leaves for a special caffeinated drink. Considering most tea brands are loaded with pesticides, a local natural source is ideal! Yaupon is Florida's native caffeinated plant and it is being planted everywhere around Florida because it is largely drought and pest resistant and produces berries to feed wildlife. I rinsed and strained the leaves, patted with a towel, and set on a baking tray in an oven for 10-12 minutes at 350 F. Then I let cool before crushing up the leaves and adding 1 TBSP to 1.5 cups of boiling water. I stirred, covered partially with a lid, reduced to a simmer for 10 minutes (stirring occasionally) and then strained into my cup. The leaves are heavy and fall to ther bottom, making the leaves easy to separate. Adding a little honey or maple syrup with some lemon make it taste wonderful! It's free, abundant, and energizing!!
